Procedure for Transfer Credit Approval

Early planning is essential. Please allow 2-4 weeks for courses to be evaluated. Note: Automatic emails/notifications are not automatically sent as part of initial submission. We reply to email inquiries & evaluation requests in the order they are received. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple emails. We will email you upon completion of processing your TCAF request. If you have multiple TCAFs pending, the final results won’t be sent until all TCAFs have been completed. In the meantime, you can view the databases for equivalency progress for new evaluations.

Step 1 – Course Selection

  • Meet with your academic advisor to determine the best course options.
  • Select the institution you plan to attend as a guest student.

Step 2 – Review the transfer equivalency databases to determine if the course has been evaluated.

CoE Study Abroad Course Database

If the course has not been evaluated or the evaluation has expired or will expire soon, you need to submit a Domestic Transfer Credit Approval Form or an International Transfer Credit Approval Form. Each course needs a separate TCAF, but after submitting the first course, you can submit another to the same institution with parts of the form pre-filled. Students should not submit over 15 course requests at a time. Submitting excessive requests at one time will limit our ability to respond to your requests in a reasonable amount of time. For international course evaluations especially, check to make sure courses are offered the desired term and in the desired language of instruction. Do some of your own research regarding how the course units may transfer to semester hours here at U-M.

The first time you login to the TCAF system, you will need to confirm your UMID and whether or not you are an Engineering student.

You will need to specify the following when submitting a TCAF:

*General info:
Transfer/Host Institution Name:

*Course info : (per course)
Attached current syllabus or accessible syllabus URL
Course subject abbreviation & number:
Course full title/name:
Credit hours at the host institution
Term the course was taken/will be taken
Year the course was taken/will be taken:

Check the Additional Important Course Information Page before moving on to Step 3

Step 3 – Review Process

  • Upon receipt of your request and materials (syllabus, etc), your TCAF will be sent to the appropriate department(s) for evaluation. Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing time.
  • As courses have been evaluated, they will appear in the ‘My Approved TCAFs’ or ‘My Transfer Credit Backpack’ section of the TCAF portal. You must be logged in to check these. Please review these carefully for course equivalency decisions as they may differ from what you had originally requested.
  • Print your results to create a summary document or PDF with all the details. Take this to your advisor for and keep a copy for your own reference.
  • If the TCAF-Results do not match your requested UM course equivalent, please work with your advisor to identify another course(s) at the guest institution and submit a new TCAF.

Step 4 – Registration at Guest Institution

Step 5 – Complete the course and request an official transcript.

Transcripts should be issued from the institution and sent directly to one of the following addresses below.

  • You must earn a grade equivalent to a C or better to earn transfer credit.
  • After 6 weeks, view your unofficial transcript on Wolverine Access to verify that your transfer credit has been posted.

  • For non-engineering courses, LSA students should use the form in this link LSA Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. CoE students should use NOT use the LSA request form.
